LI17A Fortezza Nuova – The New Fortress

The Fortezza Nuova, or “New Fortress,” is a fortification of Livorno. It represents the ancient “Bulwark of Saint Francis” of the pentagonal city designed by Bernardo Buontalenti. Originally it enclosed the “Bulwark of Santa Barbera” as well, until it was partially dismantled to make way for the second augmentation of the Venezia Nuova quarter. The New Fortress rises amidst a vast basin of water, and is linked to the city by a small bridge, as well as by several mobile small bridges set up in recent years. Until the first years of the twentieth century, on the rampart at the centre of the fortress there stood a cannon, which would be fired off every day to announce the hour of twelve noon.
