LI14 Mascagni Terrace

The Mascagni Terrace is a large open space located on the seafront of Livorno alongside Viale Italia. Demarcated on the seaside by a sinuous balustrade formed by 4,100 elegant small columns, its paving is composed of a chequerboard layout, 8,700 square meters in area, and formed by 34,800 black and white tiles. The original nucleus was built during the 1920s, but the terrace was significantly enlarged immediately after World War II. From the architectural standpoint, despite the period in which its original nucleus was designed, the terrace does not reflect the rigorous stylistic dictates of the Fascist regime. Instead it conveys, through the purity of its surfaces and the infinity of the small columns, an aspect of metaphysical abstraction.
