LI12 Villa Fabbricotti – F. D. Guerrazzi Public Library of Livorno

The Biblioteca Labronica, named in honour of Francesco Domenico Guerrazzi, is Livorno’s principal public library. Its origins can be traced back to the Accademia Labronica (the Livorno Academy) founded by Giuseppe Vivoli in 1816, with the aim of promoting letters, science, and the arts at Livorno. The members also founded a library, which already in the first half of the nineteenth century counted 7,000 volumes. Here are found a rich collection of autograph volumes (such as those of Giacomo Leopardi and Galileo Galilei), manuscripts (for example, of Ugo Foscolo) and antique books printed in Livorno from the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries; particularly noteworthy is the edition of the Encyclopédie of Diderot and d’Alembert. Over the years the library has been enriched through substantial and important donations.
