GR21 The Aldobrandeschi and Sienese Walls, Magliano in Toscana

The strategic importance of Magliano, located very close to the sea but also to the inland area between Amiata and Pitigliano, has never been in doubt. Today the circuit of walls of Magliano in Toscana is one of Tuscany’s most interesting and complete medieval urban fortifications, both for its scenic aspect and for its status as a top-ranked example of military architecture. On the hill where the town is built, a castle was present, mentioned for the first time in 1097, and included in all the acts of partition of the territorial holdings of the Aldobrandeschi, counts of Santa Fiora and the lords of this region.
