The Alta Rocca Museum

The Museum of the Alta Rocca in Livia is a space for presenting the archaeological collections and cultural heritage of this mountainous region of southern Corsica, giving a diachronic overview of local specificities. Every year, exhibitions, conferences, seminars and other fun workshops allow the public to complete the visit.
In its current form, the Alta Rocca Museum was inaugurated in 2007. Its main vocation is to gather, conserve, present and explain the micro-regional archaeological collections. The permanent collection retraces almost ten millennia of evolution, of settlements and of the environment, in a mountain context but also deeply linked to the lower valleys. The exhibition is housed in a modern building in the heart of the village of Livia. A true museum of the territory, it offers the public a complete panorama of the ways of life of the past, while being innovative in the way it presents them. Most of the main gallery retraces the geological, human and environmental evolution of the Alta Rocca, from its origins to the Middle Ages and beyond. Several showcases display real emblems of the museum: the "Lady of Bonifacio", the rat rabbits, the "Venus of Denes", the chewing gum of Cucuruzzu, the "Lady of Capula", etc., make it possible to explain a part of society from an archaeological remains. Numerous illustrations encourage the visualisation of ancient know-how, particularly from a didactic point of view. The last aspect explored is the liturgical heritage with, at the head of the gondola, the famous 16th century ivory Christ from the workshops of Giambologna. The second part of the permanent exhibition is currently being redefined. It will present the economic and natural particularities, as well as the customs specific to the Alta Rocca: pastoralism, the exploitation of chestnuts, olives, cereals, wood, wool (fulling mills), charcoal (charcoal kilns), clay (tile kilns), lime, beekeeping, for the economy, the orbicular diorite, the needles of Bavella, the Piscia di Ghjaddu, the mouflon, the deer, the bearded vulture for the environment, the festival of Barabò, the Catinacciu, the Livian cuisine, the pilgrimage of Notre-Dame-des-Neiges, for the customs, etc. Each year, several exhibitions, conferences, symposiums and workshops allow all the public to deepen an aspect or a period.
