Archaeological sites of Cuccuruzzu - Capula - San Larenzu - Levie

Classified as a historical monument, the site of Cucuruzzu reveals architectural remains from the Bronze Age. You can discover a Bronze Age fortress, the prestigious Casteddu di Cucuruzzu. This ensemble places this site among the most important in the Alta Rocca region. After this visit, you can continue to the neighbouring medieval site of Capula, with its defensive tower, its habitat and the church of San Larenzu.
By crossing a Mediterranean forest in the heart of a preserved environment, you will discover the Casteddu of Cucuruzzu, which is one of the twenty or so known casteddi on the island, located mainly in southern Corsica. It was in 1959 that the archaeologist Roger Grosjean, to whom we owe the fame of the sites of Filitosa (Sollacaro) and Cauria (Sartè), mentioned the site of Cucuruzzu. In 1964, the study was taken up by François de Lanfranchi, who continued and extended his research until the 1990s. Built by the men of the Bronze Age, it was established within a granite chaos, dominating the northern slope of the Livia plateau. Below the casteddu to the north-east, several terraces and shelters were occupied; it is a village, surrounded by a protective wall (not accessible). The main monument is the Torra (tower: probable place for storing and processing foodstuffs), which still has part of its roof. The remains collected during the excavations are presented in the Alta Rocca Museum.
