Museum of Corsica

The Museum of Corsica, in Corti, is a place of conservation and valorisation of collections of rural ethnology and popular art, but also a place of interrogation on the present and the future of Corsica in societal, economic and cultural approaches. Each year, a new temporary exhibition and its counterpoints complete the permanent exhibition.
The Museum of Corsica opened its doors in June 1997 to house the collection of ethnography collected by Father Louis Doazan, commissioned by the National Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions. The architect Andrea Bruno, a UNESCO expert and specialist in the rehabilitation of old buildings, has turned this place into a real site museum. Located in the heart of the citadel, which is a listed historic monument, and combining the renovation of a neo-classical building with contemporary construction, it offers the public a space conducive to the discovery of a culture and its territory. Its museography is based on the articulation of two permanent galleries and temporary exhibition spaces. The Doazan gallery highlights the way travellers and ethnologists have looked at traditional rural Corsica over the centuries. The "museum in the making" gallery is devoted to the problems of current anthropology. In addition, a room is dedicated to the citadel of Corti, "A citadella di Corti, une citadelle pour horizon". Each year, a new temporary exhibition and its counterpoints, as well as an educational and interactive space dedicated to young people, complete the tour. It is accompanied by a richly illustrated catalogue with articles by well-known scientists on the subject. This museum of society and its cultural programme thus offer a diversity of points of view which accompany the visitor so that he can construct his own view of Corsica. A resource institution in terms of Corsican ethnography between the end of the 19th century and the 1970s, the museum's collections are regularly enriched with objects and audio and audiovisual documents that bear witness to the dynamism of this society with its plural identities. Nearly 10,000 ethnographic objects, paintings, prints and drawings, maps, postcards and photographs make up the heritage collection, as well as sound and documentary archives. Since its opening, no less than 1,540,000 visitors have come to discover these spaces and the site of the citadel of Corti.
