Torre di Capo Mannu - San Vero Milis

A tower built between 1572 and 1577, at 51 metres above sea level on the Capo Mannu promontory.
The Torre di Capo Mannu rises 51 metres above sea level on a promontory once called ‘Capo las Salinas’ or ‘Monte delle Saline di Oristano’. The name Capo Mannu, currently in use, appeared in Latin as "Capitis Magni" as early as 1590. It was built between 1572 and 1577 with the aim of guarding the cove of Su Pallosu but also the entire coastal strip north of Sinis, also guarded by the towers of ‘Sa Mora’ and ‘Scala 'e Sale’, as far as the beach of Is Arenas, the cliffs of Santa Caterina and the Tower of ‘Capo Nieddu’. It also protected the salt pans and the numerous tuna fisheries that were established off the coast of Oristano in that period. Originally, the tower had a diameter of about 9 meters at the base, a parade ground about 8 meters wide and it was about 10 metres high. The garrison was made up of an Alcaide (commander) and two soldiers, to which an artilleryman was added in 1801, armed with two cannons and a springald, thus setting the tower up as a "torre de armas". The tower was manned up until 1846 and then abandoned. To reach it, from the centre of Putzu Idu, from the town of Sa Marigosa, take the narrow road on the right signposted to the tower. Drive up to about 300 metres from the tower and then continue along the path for about 10 minutes.
