Provincial road 49, which connects Bosa to Alghero, is one of the most stunning panoramic roads in Sardinia. It is notable for its colourful landscapes, intense fragrances and a feeling of freedom in close contact with nature, interrupted only by a few isolated shepherds' huts. Along the road, about seven kilometres from Bosa, an unforgettable sight appears, looking out towards the sea: it is the promontory of Torre Argentina, on which a watchtower has stood guard for more than five centuries. At its feet, a succession of coves framed by white limestone cliffs and dotted with basalt rocks and flat rocks, which almost seem lunar in appearance. The sea that opens out in front is an intense cobalt blue. Fifty meters from the shore there is a rocky known as ‘isola de sas crabas’ (Island of the Goats). The landscape behind it is made up of stretches of Mediterranean scrubland alternating with green meadows. The tower was built for defence purposes in the late 16th century. It housed a small garrison and a light armament and allowed for constant visual contact with the tower of Bosa and, even further south, with that of Columbargia. At sunset, its dark, solitary profile, in contrast with the warm, bright colours of the sun, is sure to stir strong emotions. From the tower, you can follow several trekking routes along the coast, surrounded by rosemary, myrtle, cistus and helichrysum. Heading south you will reach Cala Sa Codulera, a pebble beach lapped by a shallow, clear sea, ideal for snorkelling. Continuing further along, a bay encloses the small beach of Compoltitu, with white-hued sand and limestone cliffs. Back on the scenic route, just over ten kilometres north of Torre Argentina, you will enter the heart of the 'griffon vulture coast', a stretch of coastline that has become the territory of the rare bird of prey. This is where the biomarine park of Capo Marargiu is located. In addition to the griffon vulture, golden eagles and peregrine falcons nest here. At the foot of the promontory, the seabed is no less rich and varied in terms of fauna. Lobsters, groupers, conger eels, rays and bream appear in sea caves and ravines. The most distinctive element of colour is provided by the corals. Before returning to the asphalt road, it is impossible not to take another look at the view. To the right is Capo Caccia, there are several rocky islets in the open sea, including sa Pagliosa, and to the south the white trachyte cliffs of the Bosa coastline.
