CITY HALL

During the Genoese era, la « Casetta », a building located in the Citadel area was used as the town hall. From the 18th century onwards, this institution was relocated on a regular basis until the end of the 19th century and the renovation of premises on the market square (Place du Marché)
During the Genoese era, power was located inside the Citadel. Therefore, throughout that period, the “Casetta”, house of the first podestat (the Genoese equivalent of a mayor) was used as the town hall. When Corsica was incorporated into the kingdom of France, the Citadel lost all of its political functions. The town hall was then moved on a regular basis. From 1811, it was successively located in the Convent of the Lazarist Missionaries (currently Jean Nicoli vocational school), in the former convent of the Jesuits (currently Simon-Jean Vinciguerra secondary school), in Maison Vidau (on Chanoine Letteron street) and in pavilion Favelli (in the street of the same name). In 1855, the town decided to purchase a military building used as a storehouse and located on the market square (Place du Marché). It took nearly twenty years for the sale to be completed. In May 1873, the town council accepted the plans and decoration proposed by Andrea Scala, a famous Italian architect who was also in charge of designing the new town theatre. However, the public building commission deemed the project too costly. The final project was limited to the interior renovation of the former military building whose façade was adorned with the type of ornamentation that was in fashion at the end of the 19th century: triangular pediments, balcony with balusters on corbels, pilasters, an imposing moulded cornice with modillions. An aedicule featuring a medallion bearing the city’s coat of arms was also added to the top of the roof. The works were awarded to a local contractor on 16th May 1876 and on the 17th of May of the following year the town council met for the first time in the building. In 1982, a new administrative centre was established on Saint-Nicolas square. The building located on the market square still houses some municipal services (the registry office) and the wedding hall
