ORATORY OF THE CONFRATERNITY OF SAINT ROCH

The brotherhood of Saint-Roch was founded in 1588. Membership is reserved for young men whose parish is in the lower part of town. The current building dates back to 1604.
The Confraternity of Saint Roch was founded in 1588. It is traditionally reserved to the adolescents of the parish of the lower town. Once they have become adults, they must leave it in order to enter another confraternity of the city. The original oratory was too small. It was completely reconstructed in 1604. The façade was redecorated in the 19th century in the neo-classical style, by the architect Jean-Louis Guasco , from Bastia. Four columns in the Tuscan style bear an entablature crowned with a triangular fronton. The great portal in white marble, topped by the pilgrims’ shell, was carved in 1860 by Giuseppe Bertolucci, a marble mason, an inhabitant of Bastia, originally from Tuscany. The interior decoration retains the style of some baroque oratories in Liguria, where the walls are covered with red silk damask and panelling in polished walnut. The architectural altar-piece, with high monolithic columns, was carved in Bastia by the Genoese marble mason Domenico Saporito. The altar table and the steps were entirely made again in 1798. The picture of the high altar, dated 1626, was made by the famous Florentine painter Giovanni Bilivert. It represents Saint Roch, Saint Martin, Saint Catherine of Alexandria and San Sebastian at the feet of the Madonna and Child. In the nave, two glazed niches contain procession statues in polychrome wood made by the sculptor Luigi Griscella. The one on the left represents Saint Roch, the one on the right, dated 1801, Saint Sebastian.
