THE TOWER OF THE OLD SEMINARY

The first seminary of the city was created at the end of the 16th century thanks to the donation of a devout Bastiais.
This square building with high and narrow facades is one of the oldest of the district. The first seminary in Bastia was installed there. By a deed executed by a notary, dated 1584, a pious inhabitant of Bastia called Domenico Bonasperanza instituted an allowance which permitted the opening and functioning of the seminary. This seminary followed the prescriptions of the Council of Trent (1545-1563), with the purpose to improve the training of the clergy through the creation of specialized educative establishments. From the start, the seminary was very successful, attracting more and more students every year. As the building had not sufficiently spacious lecture rooms to receive all the seminarists, the establishment was transferred into a big neighbouring building in 1663. On the main façade, the central bay has been given a curve due to the interior arrangement. The floors are connected by a circular spiral staircase, the stairway of it projects over the street like a turret. During the Revolution, the act of 10 July 1791 allowed the requisition of the building. It was made the property of the state and assigned to the army. In 1802 the building housed some workshops of the garrison. The building, considered to be too small and not suited to the needs of the army, was handed over as a property of the State according to a ministerial decision of 1857. Nowadays the building is private property.
