Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul, Piedicroce

This baroque church, built on an older building, dates from the 17th century. It consists of a single nave and a barrel-vaulted choir. The bell tower has four levels. The parish church and the confraternity chapel are classified as Historic Monuments.
The church has an elongated plan with a flat chevet and consists of a single nave and a choir with barrel vaults. Its baroque façade, with two levels of composite order, is topped by a moulded triangular pediment. The bell tower, which is attached to the south wall of the church, has four levels topped by a lantern. The first two levels (one with a door surmounted by an ogival arch and the other with geminated bays separated by a column) were the base of an old bell tower built in the Middle Ages. The parish church of St Peter and St Paul was built between 1684 and 1696, on the site of an older building mentioned by Mgr Mascardi in his pastoral visit of 1589. In 1707, the stucco artist Angelo Maria Fontana made the high altar (signed and dated). Two side chapels are also by him. A fragment of the altarpiece of the Virgin and Child adorns the high altar. This painting on wood was made by an anonymous painter active in Corsica between 1510 and 1530. The masonry and stucco preaching pulpit was executed in 1723 by Giovanni Raffalli, the first of a dynasty of stucco artists and painters from Pedicroce, active in Corsica in the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1761, Ignazio Saverio Raffalli, Giovanni's son, carried out the stucco decoration and polychromy of the main façade (signature and date painted on the frieze of the entablature, above the entrance door). The secondary altar of the Rosary is decorated with a painting signed by the Roman painter Ermenegildo Costantini and dated 1763. The wall and ceiling decoration was created in 1865 by the Corsican painter François Antoine Alberti. Near the parish church is the chapel of the white penitent brotherhood, dedicated to Saint Devote. It too bears the mark of the Raffalli family: Ignazio Saverio decorated the façade in 1751 and the high altar in 1771.
