Like the one in Guaitella, it is called Funtana vechja because of its age in relation to the supply of drinking water in the fountains and houses of the municipality. Funtana vechja produces very fresh water all year round. It has a basin (u trughjettu) which was used as a watering place for animals (mules, donkeys, cattle). Because of its central location, the fountain has been (and still is) a great place for meetings and conviviality. From generation to generation... The women sat on the stone benches on either side of the fountain, while the children played at floating small boats made of walnut shells on the surface of the small adjoining basin, which had seen many generations pass by. This social and cultural function of the fountain was present in the work of Sebastianu d'Alzetu, a famous poet and writer born in the village. Another author, Ghjiseppu Braccini from Guaitella, celebrated this place: "If the fountain could speak and say how many kisses have been given, and how many promises have been exchanged by young lovers...". The old Alzetu fountain remains a remarkable heritage landmark, for the visitor who wants to reach Guaitella or go up to "E Nivere".
