Church and Oratory of Our Lady of the Assumption

Rossiglione Inferiore is characterised by the imposing but discreet bulk of the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption. The first news of this church date back to 1301, and it is certainly mentioned again in 1365. At that time, in the Middle Ages, its structure, unlike today's, faced east, as was absolutely necessary at the time, and the remains of the ancient façade can still be found on the western wall of the current building. The present structure exists thanks to the impressive reconstruction work carried out between the 16th and 17th centuries. We know for certain that the bishop of Acqui himself came in 1577 to plead with the faithful of Rossigiano for the reconstruction of the ancient medieval church, which was by then in ruins. The new, rotated structure was characterised by a basilica plan, with a width equal to its length, and dominated by the extraordinary dome with an octagonal drum and lantern, a unique work in the entire Val d'Orba, built in the 18th century. The splendid inlaid altar dates back to that century. The sculptures inside the church reflect the strong devotion to St Joseph that has characterised the parishioners of Rossiglione Inferior over the centuries. In fact, there are two statues dedicated to the saint. The first, St Joseph with Child, dates from the 18th century. In the following century, the imposing sculptural group of the 'Transito di san Giuseppe' (Transit of St Joseph) by Luigi Montecucco from Gavio. It was only at the end of a complex contractual process that this majestic processional chest, the work of one of the most prestigious artists of the 19th century in Liguria and Piedmont, was completed. The façade was rebuilt in the early 20th century and completed in 1914. Its pictorial covering, now almost completely lost, is the work of Domenico Buscaglia. We are in the context of the massive interventions made necessary at the end of the 19th century also due to the earthquake of 1887, which led to the interior decoration. Two frescoes stand out: "Transito di san Giuseppe" (Transit of St Joseph) and "San Bernardo riceve l'omaggio dei genovesi" (St Bernard receives the homage of the Genoese), painted by Alfredo Luxoro of Genoa. In painting the latter, he shows that he was very familiar with the Chapter House of the nearby Tiglieto Abbey, which is well represented in the painting. At the end of a dispute, Luxoro left the building site to the more modest Rodolfo Gambini, who did the other works in the church.
