The "Fornace Bianchi"

For centuries, the local population has based its economy on the production of lime, working in the kilns in the area and selling a high quality product, which is also used in the construction of prestigious buildings, such as the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa and other defensive and port works. The oldest kilns, known as intermittent fire kilns, were located in the centre of the town, between the houses, near the sea and the docks from which the ships used to transport materials. Later, in the first half of the 19th century, these furnaces ceased production. They were gradually replaced by more modern continuous fire furnaces, built far away from houses, near the limestone quarries upstream from the railway station. The restored Bianchi kiln dates from this second period and is a splendid example of 19th-century industrial architecture. It is a structure of extraordinary value, interest and beauty: it was the first historical furnace in Italy accessible to visitors both outside and inside. It is an important testimony to the history of manufacturing activities in Cogoleto in the past. Today the structure is entrusted to the Association "Fornace Bianchi", which ensures its opening, accompanies visitors inside and organises cultural initiatives.
