Immersed in the green of a luxuriant wood, the church of St Catherine, or rather what remains of it, suddenly and mysteriously reveals itself to you. Built by the Capponi family at the end of the 14th century, only three sides remain standing, but to tell the truth, this appearance, which is the result of the passing of the centuries and evidently of a lack of human intervention, together with its isolation in the middle of the woods, increase its charm and mystery. The façade is still intact, and a central splayed roundel of fine workmanship conveys the importance of the place. Above all, the façade still bears the epigraph from the time of its foundation. It reads like a notarial deed, drawn up by the notary signed at the bottom, Manuele Sardo. There are indeed many peculiarities of this inscription: firstly, its very existence and position: it was deemed necessary to record the will to found the church by means of a notarial deed carved in stone. As written, it is to be attributed in 1390 to Antonio Capponi; secondly, that these lines are in Latin hexameters, that is, in verse, a sign of truly superior refinement and taste. In the silence and peace that this place offers, our soul is left to feel a sense of tranquillity, and at the same time to wonder: why such an important place in such a remote area? Evidently it wasn't then, probably in fact what is now a path through the woods must have been an important transit route, and the wayfarers' routes were always dotted with places of refreshment, material, and of the soul.
