Ethnographic Museum of Witchcraft

Right at the beginning of the village of Triora, for those coming from the bottom of the valley, there is the Ethnographic Museum of Witchcraft, born from the collaboration of many different energies, all in love with Triora. First, that of Father Francesco Ferraironi, who dedicated his life to the collection and conservation of artefacts that in some way recount the past and preserve the memory of the centuries of Triora. Then, the contribution of the local Pro Loco and the various administrations that have followed since the 1980s to give consistency and a home to the collection. The museum, which is now very rich, is spread over three floors, the first two of which are occupied by the more typically ethnographic sections. If on the first floor we find the sections dedicated, for example, to the archaeology of Triora or to art and craftsmanship, the former being very important as it explains that this area has been frequented by man since the Middle Neolithic, it is in the basement that we find all the sections more closely related to the daily life of the ancient "Trioresi" (people from Triora). The objects in the cellar, the kitchen, those relating to milk production or the harvesting and processing of chestnuts, enrich the visitor's visit with skilful references to a past of work, sacrifice but also to the quality of human relationships. As in the whole Ligurian arch, this community depended heavily on the chestnut tree as a source of sustenance and quality wood. In the section called "Trades" we find evidence of what was for centuries the main peculiarity of Triora: a rich and important production of wheat, which earned it the title of "granary of Genoa". However, it is in the basement that the museum unleashes all its specificity and particularity. Here you can still see the prisons where the alleged "witches" of what is perhaps the most famous trial for witchcraft in Counter-Reformation Italy, the Triora witch trial of 1587, were imprisoned. Copies of acts, reconstructions and documentation take the visitor back into the dramatic atmosphere of this event.
