The Collegiate Church of Triora stands right opposite the Ethno-historical Museum of Witchcraft in Palazzo Stella. With its majesty it dominates the elegant square opposite, and certainly bears witness to the greatness of Triora over the centuries. The elegant façade is matched by an equally important interior, rich in valuable works of art, which, belonging to different epochs and manufactures, span all the golden centuries of the Apennine village. The baptistery houses the most valuable work: the "Baptism of Christ" by Taddeo di Bartolo, dating back to 1397. A "Pietà", with the Madonna, Mary Magdalene, St John the Evangelist and pious women, is located near the altar and dates back to the early 15th century. From the same period, in the same location, belongs a representation of 'Saint James Minor', of Lombard tradition, recently discovered as a palimpsest of an overlying 'Ecce Homo'. Above the altar dominates an "Assumption" by Lorenzo Gastaldi from Triora, dated 1680, largely inspired by the similar painting by Guido Reni in St Ambrose in Genoa. Also near the altar are two masterpieces: a wooden crucifix by Anton Maria Maragliano, from the mid-18th century, and a much older 14th-century processional Christ, certainly of Italian manufacture with French influences, which is still used today for devotional Easter ceremonies. Also participating in these devotional processions is the beautiful statuary group of Our Lady of Mercy, by Paolo Olivari from Genoa, dating from the 19th century. The majestic luminosity of the interior of the Collegiate Church is favoured by the single hall, the form taken by the church after the alterations of the second half of the 18th century, which demolished the other naves. Since the 16th century, this church has played a central role in the local faith and ecclesiastical organisation, soon becoming the mother church of a vast territory.
