Bridge of Arco and Bridge of Mezzavalle

The Arco and Mezzavalle bridges are two important bridges that have allowed people to cross the Cicana for centuries. Their fine workmanship is a reminder of the strenuous efforts of our ancestors, who for centuries first built them and then maintained them with constant, expert care. On the other hand, this area of Liguria has had a strong vocation as a transit area since the most remote centuries. Above all, it was in the early Middle Ages that it was affected by the transit lines that led from the Abbey of Bobbio to the sea. It was in fact the very important monastery that gave a very important function to this area of Liguria, in which it took root with different types of settlements, some for religious purposes, others purely economic. Certainly, Bobbio chose this area as its privileged area because it had an important outlet to the northern Tyrrhenian Sea. On the other hand, the name of the municipality in which these bridges fall, San Colombano Certenoli, takes its name from the Irish saint who founded the abbey of Bobbio. To understand the importance of this area for Bobbio in the Middle Ages, one need only think that the Abbey of Borzone, the most important monastic settlement in the area, was founded as a dependency of the Abbey of Bobbio.
