The Hermitage of St Mary of Vezzùla

Not far from the heart of the village of Masone, stands the medieval church of St Mary of Vezzùla, also known locally as "Il Romitorio" (The Hermitage). The exterior of the church immediately strikes the visitor. The exposed stone ashlars naturally take the visitor back in time, to the middle age in which this church was wanted and built. Its roots go back to the 12th century, when it was built by Benedictine monks. Very soon, however, it came under the control of the Cistercians, which is not surprising considering that the entire area, or rather the entire Stura valley, was influenced by the Abbey of Tiglieto, the first Cistercian foundation outside Burgundy. Isolated from the urban context, but well placed within a small park where families love to spend their leisure time, St Mary of Vezzùla is an unmissable place to visit if you want to get to know the village of Masone.
