MC15 Parish church of Santi Cornelio e Cipriano - Codiponte - Casola in Lunigiana

The parish church of Santi Cornelio e Cipriano in Codiponte is one of the most significant monuments in Lunigiana. Representing an important intersection of roads linking the coast with the interior and northern Italy, including a stretch of the Via Francigena, the area around the parish church was the site of a Roman pagus and later a village. A parish church was built in the area from the 8th century onwards, which then fell into ruin and was rebuilt in the 12th century in Romanesque style. It was rebuilt following a landslide in the 14th century, while the fortified rectory is the result of the remodelling and extension of an old tower house. The 17th-century bell tower is the most recent element, apart from the minor apse which was rebuilt during the last renovation in the 1970s.
