MC14 The Church of San Giorgio

The church of San Giorgio is a sacred building located in Filattiera. The Romanesque church of San Giorgio, with an apse nave, dates back to the 12th century and an old and rare testimony of a past age can be found inside: a gravestone dating back to 752 which was found in the rural church of Sorano. This gravestone is the one of Leodegar, one Lombard missionary (likely a bishop) who came to Lunigiana to fight paganism and for the Christianisation of Lunigiana. The writing idola fregit, he broke the idols, can be found on the gravestone; the idols were probably the stele statues of Lunigiana, which date back to the Bronze and Iron Ages.

The little church, with a simple apse-nave layout (originally, it had two naves), is from the 12th century; and the tall old bell tower is the remaining of a fortification in front of the façade in fact. In the 14th century, a second nave was added, but it was demolished in the 20th century.
