MC13 Parish church of Santo Stefano in Sorano - Filattiera

The parish church of Santo Stefano in Sorano is located on the Filattiera plain, along the ancient route of the Via Francigena, in an area of major historical interest. Historically, the plain was an ancient place of worship, as evidenced by the numerous stele statues found there. A farmhouse from Roman times was built here in the 1st century BC, possibly belonging to a 'Gens Suria', an ancient defence building that has now disappeared, the 'Kastron Soreon'. Inside the parish church was the tombstone of Leodgar, which is now in the church of San Giorgio, also in Filattiera. He was probably a Lombard bishop or gastald who died in 752, a proponent of the Christianisation of Lunigiana and the destruction of numerous stone idols, as the plaque itself states.
