LI30 Archaeological Area of Poggio del Molino

The Archaeological Area of Poggio del Molino spreads across the northern and eastern sides of a promontory that serves as a dividing line between the beach of Rimigliano to the north, and the Gulf of Baratti to the south, at the northern border of the township of Piombino, in the province of Livorno. The ancient Roman buildings rise atop a plateau, located at twenty meters above sea level, which dominates, to the west, the stretch of seacoast between San Vincenzo and the Isle of Elba, and to the east, the metal-bearing hills of the Campigliese area and the lowland lagoons zone. The summit of the hill is occupied by the picturesque Villa del Barone, built in 1923 by Barone Luigi De Stefano and Assunta Vanni Desideri, the daughter of Eugenio. The Archaeological Museum of the Territory of Populonia and Piombino includes a section dedicated to the Villa of Poggio del Molino, in which one can admire the display of items selected from the findings made during the excavations of the 1980s.
