LI04 Hermitage of Santa Maria della Sambuca in Valle Benedetta

This narrow valley is characterised by a particularly humid, temperate climate due to the morphology of the land and the northern exposure of many slopes. This climate has favoured the development of a rich variety of trees and plants, to the extent that more than 260 species have been recorded, some of which are of particular botanical and phytogeographical interest The fauna in the area consists of mammals (wild boar, roe deer, fallow deer, weasels, hedgehogs, skunks, badgers, squirrels and foxes), birds (including jays, redstarts, buzzards, barn owls and tawny owls) and reptiles (viper, grass snake, collared snake, lizard, wall lizard, toad and green frog). Within the area is the ancient hermitage of Santa Maria della Sambuca.
