The Museum of Archaeology of Corsica, in Sartè, is a place of conservation and valorisation of archaeology and palaeontology collections. The permanent exhibition invites you to discover the wild fauna of Corsica 300,000 years ago. Then, to retrace the history of the settlements of Corsica, from the earliest human incursions, 10,000 years ago, to the end of the Middle Ages.

The Museum of Archaeology of Corsica is the legacy of the Centre of Corsican Prehistory, a research institution of the CNRS, which evolved into the Museum of Corsican Prehistory, a classified and controlled establishment, opened to the public in 1978, in the former prison of Sartène. Dolmens, menhirs, alignments and large megalithic architectural ensembles have attracted illustrious visitors to Corsica for nearly two centuries, following Prosper Mérimée. Initially resulting from archaeological excavations carried out since the second half of the 20th century in Corsica by Roger Grosjean and his collaborators, the collections are specialised in Prehistory and Protohistory. With the development of archaeological research, they were extended to the historical periods, Antiquity and the Middle Ages. In 2009, the museum was extended and refurbished in a new, specially designed building by the architect Yves Marchi. The materials of archaeology - stone, metal, red evoking clay - are the constituents of this modern architecture, inserted into the granite urban fabric of the most Corsican of Corsican towns, according to Mérimée. Situated at the top of the town, above the Place Porta, the nerve centre of Sartène, the museum offers a majestic panorama that stretches out towards the Valincu Gulf, where one can see the ancient passages and places of human settlement. The museographic tour was designed by Joseph Frassanito and Maurice Padovani. With nearly 1,200 square metres of exhibition space, it traces the history of the settlement of Corsica in the heart of the Mediterranean. It is organised chronologically over two hundred linear metres, with each cultural period having its own dedicated space. This establishment, backed by a conservation and study centre, favours a presentation as close as possible to archaeological research. It allows you to discover the evolution of the first human occupations in Corsica from the Mesolithic period, from the 9th millennium BC, to the Middle Ages. The Corsican Archaeology Museum brings together various contextualised remains from major sites throughout the island and from underwater archaeology. It preserves and exhibits a unique collection of statue-menhirs. It positions the history of Corsica, the fourth island in the heart of the Mediterranean, in a context of relations and exchanges. From the excavation to the museum, a visit to the museum is an essential complement to the discovery of the great megalithic and archaeological sites of Corsica, in particular the exceptional domain of Cauria.
