Church of San Giovanni di Sinis

An early Christian church dating back to the 6th century AD, built inside the necropolis of the Phoenician-Punic city of Tharros, which was later occupied by the Romans.
The characteristic village (or hamlet) of San Giovanni di Sinis contains a historical and architectural jewel of inestimable value, where you can breathe an air of spiritual peace. It is the small early Christian church of San Giovanni, carved with special shapes. First built in the Byzantine period, in the mid-6th century, the little rural church stands on a small cemetery with pagan origins: its has the characteristics of a Punic and then Christian necropolis. Facing the dawn sun, it still exudes the aura of austere sacredness that it once conveyed to devotees, reflecting the figure of St. John the Baptist to whom it is dedicated. It has a rectangular plan with a protruding apse. The structure is made up of bare sandstone blocks that recall the walls of Tharros, which was first a Phoenician-Punic colony, then a Roman one. Its original form was reworked and extended between the 9th and 10th centuries. Today it has an early medieval appearance, making it one of the oldest churches in Sardinia. Inside you can admire three naves topped by a barrel vault and separated by successive arches. Sunlight penetrates dimly through an octagonal window, enhancing the contrast between the dark interior and the bright façade.
