This large building is a testament to the success of the Carbuccia family, who originally came from a small village in the South of Corsica and settled in Bastia from the beginning of the 16th century.

This tall building, dating back to the second half of the 17tc century, is typical of the houses erected by the wealthy people of standing of Bastia. With five floors, and the main façade with eight bays of windows. On top of the main entrance, is the coat of arms of the Carbuccia family, carved in a big cartouche in the baroque style. The family came from the village of Carbuccia, in Corse du sud, and settled in Bastia as early as the 16th century. The builder of the family mansion was most probably Bastiano Carbuccia. He studied law at the University of Pisa, was a member of the “Council of the Noble Thirty”, of the Council of Elders of Bastia, and was three times podestà of Bastia, between 1666 and 1691. This house was the home of various members of the family who were distinguished in military and political careers. Such as Orazio Carbuccia (1714-1778) an officer in the service of Louis XV, captain and commanding officer of the Royal Corse regiment, named knight of the Order of Saint Louis in 1750. His son Anton Gregorio Carbuccia (1753-1831) was lieutenant-colonel, knight of the Order of Saint Louis, a member of the General Council of Corsica, mayor of Bastia from 1816 until 1818. Anton Gregorio’s son Horace (1814-1863) was councilor, then president of the Court of Appeal of Corsica, mayor of Bastia from 1848 until 1851. Horace’s brother Jean-Luc (1808-1854) was Brigadier-General, officer of the Légion d’Honneur, commander of the royal order of Francis 1 of the Two Sicilies, corresponding Member of the Institut de France. He died at Gallipoli, in the Eastern Army.
