THE SEMINARY

This building was built in 1663 to replace the former seminary by then considered too small. The education of young clerics was provided by renowned teachers who belonged to the Jesuit order.
The building was founded in 1663 by Mgr. Carlo Fabrizio Giustiniani. He transferred there the seminary of Bastia which since 1584 had been housed in a smaller building. Mgr Giustiniani annexed the north-east part of the building to his private apartments by connecting it to the neighbouring bishop’s Palace, through a vaulted passage over a narrow street. He arranged there a bedroom with a high ceiling, on the last floor under a pavilion roof opening on a terrace as a belvedere. In 1702 the seminary was considerably extended by Mgr Andrea della Rocca. The education of the young clerics was supplied by teachers belonging to the Jesuits. In late 19th century, the building was called "Casabianca barracks". The name was chosen in order to honour the memory of General Raphaël de Casabianca (1737-1825), count of the Empire, Peer of France and senator of Corsica.
