LOUIS XVI GATEWAY

Until 1936, this monumental gateway was the only access to the Citadel. It was restructured and embellished in the neoclassical style during the reign of Louis XVI.
Formerly this was the only entrance to the walled-in citadel, until a gate with turrets was opened in 1936 in front of the cathedral. The monumental gate was restyled and embellished in the neo-classical style in 1775 under the reign of Louis XVI. Claude Bertrand and Antoine-Joseph Flach were the contractors to the King. Above the door, a bas-relief in stone from Marseilles has been fastened. It represents the arms of the Kingdom of France. The crown and the fleur de lis of the coat of arms were hammered during the revolutionary period. The early fortifications date from 1480. The present ramparts which surround the upper town (Terranova) were entirely rebuilt between 1575 and 1626, the bastion of Saint-Jean-Baptiste in 1575-1576, those of Saint-Charles and Sainte-Marie in 1596. To the left of the gate, above the small houses built in a later period, the gallows had been thrust into the wall; it was used for capital punishments. The whole fortifications and the monumental gate were listed as Historical Monuments in 1935.
